Citizens in the Eastern District of Louisiana are receiving various forms of false communication (scams) by e-mail or phone. A recent scam involves jury forms with official-looking bar codes sent by e-mail that ask for personal information such as social security numbers and mother's maiden name. On June 19, 2014, the Clerk issued a Notice of Proposed Amendments to Rules 47.5, 67.1, and 67.2 of Local Civil Rules of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana and a Notice of Proposed Amendment to the Local Criminal Rules for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, adding Local Criminal Rule 23.2. The Notice required all comments to be made in writing by July 19, 2014. A request was made for an extension of 30 thirty days to submit comments. The Court en banc having considered the request for an extension of the comment period, IT IS HEREBY ORDERED that the comment period for the proposed changes to the Local Civil Rules and Local Criminal Rules is hereby extended until August 18, 2014.   Full Page View

  PUBLIC NOTICE   The current term of office of United States Magistrate Judges Sally Shushan and Karen Wells Roby are due to expire January 31, 2015 and February 21, 2015, respectively. The United States District Court is required by law to establish a panel of citizens to consider the reappointment of a magistrate judge to a new eight year term. The duties of a magistrate judge include the following: (1) conducting most preliminary proceedings in criminal cases; (2) trial and deposition of misdemeanor cases; (3) conducting various pretrial matters and evidentiary proceedings on delegation from the judges of the district court; and (4) trial and disposition of civil cases upon consent of the parties. Comments from members of the bar and the public are invited as to whether the incumbent magistrate judges should be recommended by the panel for reappointment by the court and should be directed to William W. Blevins, Clerk, United States District Court, 500 Poydras Street, Room C-151, New Orleans, Louisiana 70130.
