PUBLIC NOTICE
The current term of office of United States Magistrate Judges Sally Shushan and Karen Wells Roby are due to expire January 31, 2015 and February 21, 2015, respectively. The United States District Court is required by law to establish a panel of citizens to consider the reappointment of a magistrate judge to a new eight year term.
The duties of a magistrate judge include the following: (1) conducting most preliminary proceedings in criminal cases; (2) trial and deposition of misdemeanor cases; (3) conducting various pretrial matters and evidentiary proceedings on delegation from the judges of the district court; and (4) trial and disposition of civil cases upon consent of the parties.
Comments from members of the bar and the public are invited as to whether the incumbent magistrate judges should be recommended by the panel for reappointment by the court and should be directed to William W. Blevins, Clerk, United States District Court, 500 Poydras Street, Room C-151, New Orleans, Louisiana 70130.
Comments must be received by August 1, 2014.

The court will be open as usual at 8:30AM on Thursday, January 30, 2014.
Because of adverse weather conditions, the courthouse will be closed Tuesday, January 28, and Wednesday, January 29, 2014. Please see related Order.
The Court’s electronic filing system remains available and will be monitored for emergency matters, e.g., death penalty cases with execution dates, or deportation matters with imminent and confirmed deportation dates, that may continue to be filed.

J. Kelly III for appointment as the Federal Public Defender for the Eastern District of
Louisiana, subject to further consideration after background investigations are conducted.

A triennial attorney registration statement and fee are required by Rule 83.2.2 of the Local Civil Rules for the Eastern District of Louisiana. The Court has set the triennial fee for 2014-2016 at $45.

Pursuant to a majority vote of the active judges of this court;
IT IS ORDERED that Rule 9.1 et seq of the Rules for Lawyer Disciplinary Enforcement of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana are hereby amended as follows:
9. Post-Discipline Procedures
9.1. Payment of Fees and Costs
9.1.1. Fees of Prosecution Counsel. On completion of his/her services in any disciplinary or other matter under these Rules, counsel designated by the Lawyer Disciplinary Committee to prosecute any disciplinary action may file a motion with the clerk of court seeking an award of reasonable fees and costs, to be paid from the court’s Disciplinary Enforcement Fund Attorneys' Registration and Disciplinary Fund. In awarding fees, the court must apply the hourly rates applicable to lawyers representing indigent defendants in the court.
9.1.2. Assessment of Fees and Costs. The court may assess attorney’s fees and costs of any disciplinary proceeding against the respondent. The respondent must remit any such funds to the clerk of court per Rule 11(c) of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. for deposit into the court’s Disciplinary Enforcement Fund.

NOTICE TO THE BAR
At its September 2013 session, the Judicial Conference of the United States approved several changes to the miscellaneous fee schedules effective December 1, 2013. The appellate filing fee is increased to $505 which includes a $50 administrative fee. The records retrieval fee is increased from $53 to $64 for the first box requested from a Federal Records Center and a new fee of $39 for each additional box requested was created in an effort to recoup some of the rising shipping and processing costs for handling paper records.
